<p><font face="times new roman, times, serif" size="3">Intended Audience: 10th Grade History Students</font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Intended Outcome: The intended outcome of this lesson is for students to have a better understanding of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and how this lead to the United States' involvement in World War II. </font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Objectives: Upon completion the student will have accomplished the following: </font></p><ol><li><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Be able to determine why the United States became involved in World War II. </font></li><li><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Be able to identify the reason why Pearl Harbor was attacked.</font> </li><li><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Be able to reconstruct the events of Pearl Harbor.</font> </li><li><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Be able to assess the damage by examining photographs. </font></li><li><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Be able to discuss whether or not Japan's attack was successful. </font></li><li><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Be able to understand United States' reaction to the attack. </font></li></ol><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Materials: paper, pen or pencil, &amp; computer with internet connection</font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Procedure: Before students begin researching the attack on Pearl Harbor inform the students of what their assignment is upon completion of their research. During this lesson student will use the following websites to research the attack on Pearl Harbor: <a href="http://www.history.navy.mil/faq66-1.htm">http://www.history.navy.mil/faq66-1.htm</a>, <a href="http://www.eyewitnesshistory.com/pearl.htm">http://www.eyewitnesshistory.com/pearl.htm</a>, <a href="http://www.eyewitnesshistory.com/pearl2.htm">http://www.eyewitnesshistory.com/pearl2.htm</a>, and <a href="http://www.navsource.org/Naval/arph.htm">http://www.navsource.org/Naval/arph.htm</a>. Upon viewing and researching the websites, students will write an essay from the point of view of an eye witness (medical, military, or civilian). In this essay the student should include their reaction to the attack and if they felt Japan was successful at the attack on Pearl Harbor. </font></p><p><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Evaluation: The students essays will be evaluated using the criteria below. The essay will be worth a total of 20 points. </font></p><ul><li><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">5 points-students completed internet research</font> </li><li><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">5 points-students followed the guidelines that were given</font> </li><li><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">5 points-students provided factual information</font> </li><li><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">5 points-students showed creativity in their essay</font></li></ul>
