This unit is based on the Newberry Medal book, Holes, by Louis Sachar. It addresses the learning gap that my fourth grade reading students face in reading comprehension and analyzing text. It exposes students to these skills through quality literature. This unit gives the teacher many ideas for discussion questions, research projects, and on-line tests. It even allows students the opportunity to leave feedback about the book on-line. I believe teaching this unit will help me improve with survey question #10 which states: My students spot the important facts, concepts and vocabulary when they are learning something new. It matches the Tennessee State Curriculum Standard which states: The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text.
