Collecting and Recording Data
Annotations by Ricky Broadway
Track #50505
Format: Extended learning
This Track uses the study of weather pattern to address my fifth grade students learning gap, which was their difficulty in reading and understanding and the making and use of charts, graphs and tables. The TN. Curriculum Framework for grade 3-5 states: In order to develop Algebraic Thinking through an understanding of Patterns and Functions, the mathematics curriculum must include problems which require students to describe, extend, analyze, and create a wide variety of patterns and functions using appropriate materials and representations such as tables, graphs, and mathematical notation. Many strategies are used within this track to narrow the gap such as: Collecting and recording weather data, solving math problems using informal methods and knowledge of operations; using the internet to locate information on occurrences of hurricanes, tornados, floods and earthquakes; graphing weather research; and using higher order thinking skills to interpret data and graphs. Other thinking skills addressed in this unit are taken from the student profiler survey questions number one— I try more than one way to solve a problem; and number 24— I use the Internet to answer questions or practice skills online.

Little House in the Big Woods Comprehension
Annotations by Ricky Broadway
Track #47111
Format: Resource list
The unit "Little House in the big Woods" was chosen because it will allow my students to increase their reading comprehension as they identify the elements of a story. This was the area of weakness, as was stated in the learning gap. In this unit the students will use the Internet to read, write a letter and a book report. The Tennessee State Curriculum Framework in Reading Grades 3-5 states in the learner expectations that the students will improve reading comprehension by utilizing sources of information including technological sources as well as interpreting, analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating a written text. This unit also, will help the students use the higher order thinking skills taken from the teacher profile questions stating that the students will be willing to try things that are hard to do and they will develop the willingness to use the internet to complete class projects.
