Addition and Subtraction with Regrouping
Annotations by Janey Hickman
Track #49570
Format: Resource list
This Track addresses the learning gap of my third grade students struggling with addition and subtraction with regrouping. This learning gap is addressed through the TN Curriculum Framework Content Standards for Math 3-5: Number Sense and Number Theory; Estimation, Measurement and Computation. Expectation for these standards state:Relate the use of number in the learners' environment to the study of number; represent whole numbers concretely, pictorially, and symbolically; demonstrate a sense of reasonableness of results involving number and measurement; apply understanding of relationships between operations; demonstrate understanding of whole numbers by relating counting, grouping and place value concepts; use physical numbers to demonstrate the relationships among numbers and operations including fractions and decimals; and estimate, calculate, and evaluate solutions and communicate supporting statements. This unit provides various activities that encourage the mastery of addition and subtraction with regrouping. This unit also addresses several of the Student Survey questions from the Profiler Survey including: I learn something as completely as I can; I try tasks even if they are difficult; and I connect things I learn in school to things outside of school. Students will be actively involved in many activities to promote learning.

All of my entering third grade special education students scored below the 16th percentile on the writing subtest of the WJ-R. They also scored below average on a teacher-prepared writing inventory which focused on letter writing skills. This learning gap is addressed through the Tennessee Curriculum Framework Content Standard for Language Arts Standards Grades K-2 Writing, which states that "the student will develop the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audience." Expectations for this standard include: 1)Write to acquire knowledge, clarify thinking, improve student skills, gain confidence and promote lifelong communication; 2)Write frequently for a variety of purposes such as narration, description and personal creative expression; 3)Begin to identify and write for a variety audiences; 4)Use elements of the writing process as appropriate to the writing task; 5)Practice a variety of prewriting activities to generate and organize ideas; 6)Begin to evaluate and revise writing to focus on purpose, organization, transition and audience; 7) Recognize and demonstrate appropriate use of standard English: usage, mechanics, spelling and sentence structure. This unit will address this learning gap and provide multiple activites to address and meet learner expectations for the Writing Standard. The Student Survey Questions addressed in this unit include: 1)To see how they can best demonstrate what they know about a certain topic; 2) Learn something as completely as they can and; 3) Choose which parts of a topic are most important to explain to others. Students will be participating in various activities to promote student learning in these and other areas.
