Real Life Story Problems
Annotations by Donna Cagle
|
Track #45527
Format: Resource list
|
The learning gap my third grade students have in math problem solving is addressed in in this unit of study. After completing this collection of lessons it is hoped that my students will be able to successfully complete their own math problems using manipulatives and will find ways to use what they have learned to solve the various story problems. This lesson addresses:Math Standard 3-5 NUMBER SENSE AND NUMBER THEORY: In order to develop Number Sense and an understanding of Number Theory, the mathematics curriculum must include problems which require students to recognize, represent, and model real numbers and operations verbally, physically, symbolically, andgraphically.ESTIMATION, MEASUREMENT, AND COMPUTATION: In order to develop understanding of Estimation,Measurement, and Computation, the mathematics curriculum should include problems which require students to apply appropriate tools and units of measurement, to develop effective estimation and computation strategies for producing reasonable results, and to calculate using appropriate tools such as mental mathematics, technology, manipulatives, and pencil-and-paper. In this lesson my students will have to think about their best skills and use them to complete a task and be willing to try tasks that seem hard to do.I chose the unit because I needed a combination of lessons that taught the students how to spot the important facts, concepts and vocabulary for problem solving.

Measuring Here There and Everywhere
Annotations by Donna Cagle
|
Track #41745
Format: Resource list
|
My third grade students exhibited a learning gap in measurement. Many of the students could not identify the uses of measurements in mathematics, did not recognize the need for knowing how big or long something is, and were not able to use a ruler. This was evidenced by 70% of my students not passing a pre test in this area. Math was also identified as being a need for improvement in our school wide improvement plan. The lessons in this track addresses the learning gap and encourages hand on experiences in order to master this skill. The lessons align with The Tennessee Math Standard for Grades 3-5 which states: Estimation , Meassurement, and Computation: In order to develop understanding of Estimation, Measurement, and Computation, the mathematics curriculum should include problems which require students to apply appropriate tools and units of measurement, to develop effective estimation and computation strategies for producing reasonable results. and to calculate using appropriate tools such as mental mathematics, technology, manipulatives, and pencil-and-paper.Each lesson in this track builds upon the other. The lessons start at a low level and progress as the students master the objective in each lesson. Learning expectations for this track are:1. TLW make estimates of what they think a giant's :height, circumference and length of foot would be.2. TLW accurately measure their shadows at three different times during the day and figure the difference in the lengths and discuss why changes occur. 3. TLW define horizontal, vertical, and circumference and create a graph of their findings for the crown, trunk and height of a tree. 4.The learner will measure, draw, and cut out a flying wheel out of 6 inch card.

www.libsci.sc.edu/miller/solar.htm
Space Science
In this unit students will explore the influences and characteristics of the
sun, Earth, moon and planets while examining the relationship between these
bodies and the solar system. The students will use computer skills to locate
specific sites to research planet information. The students will construct a
model of the solar system with emphasis on an individually assigned planet
and location relative to earth. The students will compare planet orbits,
diameter, mass, and temperature. The students will demonstrate listening,
observational, and comprehensional skills of video narrative.
>From the Tennessee Curriculum Framework the following are addressed in this
unit. Science Standard 1.5c- Information should be related to prior
knowledge, Math Standard Spatial Sense and Geometric Concepts: In order to
develop an understanding of Geometric concepts the mathematics curriculum
must include problems which require students to explore geometric properties
and relationships and investigate, model, and analyze one, two, and three -
dimensional figures, The process of making prediction, drawing inferences,
and developing conclusions is based upon an individuals's prior learning and
understanding of scientific principles.

Native Americans - The First Americans
Annotations by Donna Cagle
|
Track #18103
Format: Resource list
|
My third grade students lack an awareness of Native American culture, language, and history. This was evident through class discussion and pre test of Native Americans where 80% of my students thought that all Native Americans spoke the same language, lived in the same dwellings ( teepees ), and were hunters by nature.Social Studies 3-5 Curriculum Framework Standard 1 states: Students will exhibit a knowledge of history identifying and describing major events, people, and trends.Computer Technology: Literacy and Usage Grades 3-5 Standard 5. The student will use a variety of technologies to improve classroom learning, increase productivity, and support creativiy.Language Arts curriculum Gramework states: The student will develop the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audiences. The learning objectives for this unit are: 1. The students will know that there are many tribes of Native Americans and that they differ from each other. Teacher Survey #6. 2. The student will use their knowledge of Native Americans naming practices to select a nature name for themselves. Teacher Survey #9. 3. The students will be able to name the seven clans of the Cherokee and describe their society. Teacher Survey #17. 4. The student will write, revise, and illustrate a legend explaining a phenomenon in the natural world. Teacher Survey #15. 5. The student will read a summary of Sioux History and compare it to the Cherokee. Teacher Survey #15. Learning Expectations included from the Tennessee Curriculum Framework are: The student will identify people who lived in the United States prior to exploration and colonization and the students will experience and develop interest in literature which includes multicultural, gender, and ethnic diversity. The objectives in this unit addresses the Curriculum Standards as well as the learning expectations.
