Musical Math
Annotations by Marilyn Minton
Track #47489
Format: Resource list
The stated learning gap is: My fourth grade music students are having difficulty relating math skills with music lessons. The unit Musical Math was chosen because it gives the students the opportunity to see the math connection between the musical notes and numbers by identifying note value, such as a whole note equals 4 counts. The fourth grade Math Curriculum Standard states that in order to develop understanding of Estimation, Measurement, and Computation, the mathematics curriculum should include problems which require students to apply appropriate tools and units of measurement, to develop effective estimation and computation strategies for producing reasonable appropriate tools such as mental mathematics, technology, manipulatives, and pencil-and-paper. I chose this unit because many areas of math are addressed in music lessons, such as adding note values for measures of music, subtracting, multiplication, and division of note values when identifying time signatures, and fractions for identifying note names and value.
