The fourth graders will read Mufaro's Beautiful daughters, the African version of Cinderella. They will also read Cinderella and compare the two stories. This unit will require using the Internet to complete activities.

The stated Learning gap is reading comprehension. This unit on "The Great Kapok Tree" was chosen because of the many activities that will enable the students to become more proficient in reading for information, recalling what was read, recognizing main idea, making inferences, and distinguishing between facts and opinions. The fourth grade Language Arts reading content standard states that the student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. This unit was chosen because it allows the students to use the Internet to gather information. The students will prepare creative reports to share with classmates and other classes.

This fourth grade track is designed to be used as language arts and social studies lessons using the book, Island of the Blue Dolphins as the focus piece. The students will do activities with the Island of the Blue Dolphins. They will locate the Aleutins Islands on a map on the internet. They will gather information about dolphins. They will search the author's biography for information. They will read a poem about Alaska and compare and contrast living in Alaska with living in their home state. Standards-Students will be able to use maps, globes, and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies to acquire, process, and report information from a spatial perspective. This meets Tennessee Curriculum Frameworks standards Language Arts-The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. computer technology:The student will use technology as a tool to conduct and evaluate research and to communicate effectively information and ideas.
