This track was designed for students who have demonstrated difficulty with reading comprehension. The students were unable to discuss and answer questions after independently reading a selection. The reading comprehension learning gap was determined by reviewing the students Terra-nova test scores from the 1999-2000 school year. 60% of my students scored below the 50th percentile on the basic understanding and analyze text portions of the test. Content Standard: The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. Learning Expectations: 1. Experience and develop interest in literature which includes multicultural, gender, and ethnic diversity.
2. Apply a variety of reading strategies. 3. Use comprehension strategies to enhance understanding, to make predictions, and to respond to literature. 4. Read independently for a variety of purposes. Lesson Objectives:
1. Students will use the KWL strategy to help improve reading comprehension. The students will be able to explain the three steps to the KWL reading strategy. The students will use the KWL strategy when reading the book Island of the Blue Dolphins. This lesson will be used throughout the entire reading of the book. 2. The Parts of the Plot: The student will identify the elements of the plot of a story. 3. Inferring Character Traits: Students will recognize character traits and relationships among characters. Students will recognize changes in traits and relationships as the book progresses. 4. Paper Bag Book Report: Students will make a paper bag book report that demonstrates their understanding of the book Island of the Blue Dolphins.
