Track #65223
Format: Extended learning
My students have demonstrated difficulties in reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary development, synthesizing, analyzing, application and evaluation. This site will delve into information about the author Gary Paulsen, and his book The Hatchet. It includes activities on the Canadian wilderness, biomes, and orienteering. Activities dealing with research, creativity, oral and written projects will enhance the learning. Learning expectations from the TN Curriculum Framework will be to improve comprehension, synthesis, organizing, analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating the text. In the first site, the student will research different animals found in the area where Brian Robeson landed. They will identify animals, habitat, etc. In the second site, the student will use the link Website to tour the Canadian wilderness. They will determine where the plane crash sight could have been, locating Alberta. Students will make a map of the terrain. In the third site, the student will use the Website to research, create and construct a survival kit and present to the class. In the fourth site, the student will identify different stories written by Paulsen. Then talk to the author about the type of stories he writes. The last Website is an online quiz of the book of Hatchet. These activities use the Internet for both research and talking with experts, which are areas in need from the teacher survey.
