Annotations by Pennie Layne
Track #62891
Format: Resource list
After completing this Track, students will know about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. They will understand the significance of the song "Follow the Drinking Gourd", and realize the importance of the slaves' knowledge of signs of nature and location of constallations for navigation for their very survival as they ran for freedom. The learning gap addressed is that my students do not understand the scientific relationship between the southern African-American song "Follow the Drinking Gourd", the Underground Railroad, and the science of following signs of nature and constallations for navigation. The standard addressed is Science 3-5: TN Standard 4.2b Individaul behavior may be influenced by an understanding of science concepts. Students will have ample opportunity to research using the Internet as indicated as a need on the student survey. They will then be able to answer teacher-made questions concerning the research.

This track addresses the Curriculum Standard for Music 3-5. The unit "How To Blues" was chosen because it provides numerous opportunities to connect the blues style to its historical period. It encourages students to describe what they hear and how the music expresses the mood, it provides a lesson on composing blues, it provides opportunity to use the Internet for research, and it encourages students to connect what they learn about this period in history to the musical art (hobbies) of the people of that time.
