The stated learning gap is difficulty decoding unknown words. The unit Sign of the Beaver was chosen because it requires the students to read from the chapter book. The three through five grade cluster Reading content standard tells us that the student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation and appreciation of the written text. I chose the Sign of the Beaver unit because it challenges my fourth grade students to use the Internet to explore the topic based on this chapter book to improve their decoding skills as addressed in teacher pre-survey question number 22.

This track is designed to help students become familiar with the internet and with technology. It brings together good quality children's literature and technology to create a unit of study that is intriguing and engaging.

Discovering Rocks and Minerals

The students will use the internet to learn about rocks and minerals. Through the use of this track and other lessons, the students will be able to assimilate new scientific information and apply it to the track star activities. Through the use of the internet, the students will also develop the comprehension, interpretation, analysis, and evaluation skills needed to become independent, analytical learners. This is in accordance with the 3-5 Science Content Standard which states that children use prior and new knowledge to ask questions.
