Teeth and Dental Hygiene

This track gives information with accompanying pictures, diagrams, activities, and online practice regarding teeth and dental hygiene. The students will learn about the various kinds of teeth, the difference between permanent and baby teeth, the placement of teeth in the jaw, the role of the dentist and what jobs he performs, various problems with teeth, and the proper way to take care of teeth. The students will also create stories about lost teeth and write an e-mail letter to the tooth fairy. This track relates to the framework standard which is K-12 Science in Society Tennessee Curriculum Standard "Science concepts may be applied to personal decisions." It also relates to K-12 Language Arts Tennessee Curriculum Standard which states, "The student will develop the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audiences." This track also applies to several Profiler survey questions such as #4, #8, #9, #10, #11, #17, #18. The most important Profiler survey question that this track relates to is that "My students use the Internet in my classroom for e-mail." This is something that they have only done once in the past, and I would like to incorporate it into my curriculum.

This track is designed for first grade. Student activities will include studying the geography of the different tribes, the role of Native Americans as it applies to our early country's history, and some cultural traits/practices. The students will also be exposed to literature and legends about Native Americans, and they will make several Native American art projects. The track meets the stated learning gap that the students will gain knowledge in understanding the role of Native Americans in history as well as understanding the cultural diversity as compared with the students' own culture. As well, the track meets the K-12 Tennessee Curriculum standard for Social Studies which states that students will exhibit a knowledge of history identifying and describing major events, people, and trends. The track also meets our School Improvement Plan goal to become more proficient in the area of Social Studies. Finally, the track addresses several of the Profiler survey areas such as learning a topic as completely as possible, using the internet to research topics, and demonstrating what they know about topics.

Learning expectations: understanding the symbols of our country and the concepts of leadership as shown through the lives of early leaders of our country. It addresses the Social Studes History K-2 standard that students will exhibit a knowledge of history identifying and describing major events, people, and trends. This unit addresses the survey questions about using e-mail to speak with experts (the President in this case), using online activities for practice, and demonstrating what students know about a topic.
