Write It Right
Annotations by Ray Sybert
Track #58798
Format: Worksheet
The “Write It Right” unit based on Fables was designed to give middle school language arts students the opportunity to practice writing skills including mechanics of punctuation as they first studied written fables then wrote their own. Our students show a significant learning gap in applying rules of punctuation and this exercise should help to narrow that gap as they review and practice punctuation skills on Internet prior to writing their fables. The TN Curriculum Framework Standard for Language Arts 6-8 Writing states: “The student will develop the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audiences.” This unit meets that standard because language mechanics reviewed in this study are one of the learner expectations listed under that standard. Survey item #5, “My students learn something as completely as they can” will be addressed since students will be reinforcing punctuation skills learned earlier. Survey item #24, “My students use Internet…to answer questions or practice skills online” will be addressed as students use online tutorials and skills drills to improve the punctuation of their fables.

Poetry: An Exercise in Form
Annotations by Ray Sybert
Track #23024
Format: Resource list
Eighth grade students are required to study a variety of literary genres, among them poetry. According to their Terra Nova scores, they still lack mastery in reading comprehension. This unit will address that gap by providing opportunities for the student to read silently and aloud within a group, and to learn various forms of poetry as well as write some original verse. In providing these opportunities, the unit meets TN Curriculum Standard for Language Arts Reading 6-8 which states: "The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text." The unit also addresses item #22 of the Survey (My students use Internet in my class to research topics) since the students will use Internet to research poetry forms.
3.
My Side of the Mountain
Annotations by Ray Sybert
Track #23022
Format: Resource list
Eighth grade reading students need encouragement to keep them reading at a time when they are becoming very socially involved and tend to give it up. Their Terra Nova scores still show that their comprehension is not what it should be. This unit provides a good classroom read of an exciting novel with good discussion potential. In reading together, they will hopefully narrow this comprehension gap. The unit addresses TN Curriculum Standard for 6-8th grade reading that states: "The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text." Pre-Survey item #22 (My students use Internet in my classroom to research topics) is addressed because students will be doing several enrichment activities using Internet.
4.
Hatchet
Annotations by Ray Sybert
Track #23023
Format: Resource list
Eighth grade students read Hatchet as part of their regular Reading curriculum to increase understanding, word recognition, and analysis as well as appreciation of literature. This unit will add enrichment activities that will give extra practice in those skills and help the students gain helpful background knowledge that should aid their comprehension of the novel. In doing this, the unit addresses TN Curriculum Standard for Language Arts Reading 6-8 which states: "The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text." It also addresses Survey item #22 (My students use Internet in my classroom to research topics) because students will be doing several enrichment activities that depend on Internet research.
5.
Is a Picture Worth a Thousand Words?
Annotations by Ray Sybert
Track #23021
Format: Resource list
In this unit, students will use photographs to serve as inspiration for writing different styles of paragraphs. Supporting URL's will focus on how to give the paragraphs varied sentences and vocabulary, proper sequence, and unity. The unit addresses the TN Curriculum Standard for grades 6-8 language arts: "The student will develop the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audiences." In working through this unit, students should show growth in pre-survey skills #5 and 6 since they will be increasing their knowledge of writing paragraphs and will find ways to use this knowledge in writing for their other classes. Item #1 is also addressed because students will be learning several different ways to approach the problem of paragraph development.
