 Track Description

In this lesson, students will brainstorm about how their favorite foods might be converted to astronaut food. They will explore the history of food science and food trends within NASA and its impact on foods here on Earth. To conclude, you will create a creative graphic organizer illustrating different foods and technologies available to astronauts to make food more enjoyable on space flights.

Student Objectives are:

1. Evaluate how their favorite foods would hold up in space.

2. Define required list of vocabulary words in complete sentences.
3. Learn about current trends at NASA to make astronaut food more appetizing by reading and discussing, “Taking Humdrum Astronaut Food, and Kicking It Up a Notch.”  Answer related questions to articles in complete sentences.
4. Establish what food is available for consumption in space travel and the technology needed to accomplish the task grounded in scientific research.

5.  Create a graphic organizer using Inspiration or Microsoft Word to explain the types of food available to astronauts to eat,  how they are packaged, what utensils astronauts use, and what items are found on a food tray on a space shuttle and why.

6.  Answer conclusion questions in complete sentences

Students will have the option to complete extra credit assignments one of which is to create their own NASA specific menus based on current technology.
