 Track Description

Eastern Europe is often overlooked because of the closer ties the U.S. has with Western Europe; however, we often forget that the world has become more inter-dependent and that the U.S. is influenced by what goes on in Eastern Europe today.

The purpose of this lesson is for students to investigate the effects that Communism took on Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union. After students have conducted research, students will convene in a forum in which they discuss what action they think that the former Communist government should take.

The class will be divided into two groups:

1. Advantages Group: This group will argue that Communism provided great opportunities for its people. Be sure to use specific examples.  Suggested subtopics to consider: equality for all and healthcare.

2. Disadvantages Group: This group will talk about problems and disadvantages of living in a Communist society. Be sure to use specific examples. Suggested sub-topics to consider are censorship, restrictions, and abusive power.
