 Track Description
It is what is inside that counts! What is inside the search tool database that you choose to use to find information on the Internet? If you are a “Googler” you are using one of many commercial Internet search tools that are sponsored (or funded) by ads and vendors. This sponsorship tells us a lot about the intended purpose of this Internet search tool and gives us a good indication of what can probably be found in its database. When we search for information using a commercial Internet search tool we can expect to find a good amount of websites in our results list that have been placed on the Internet with the intent of selling us something. Currently and perhaps unfortunately, the commercial search tools are the ones that are the most popular, like Google, Ask Jeeves, Yahoo, et al. They are also the ones that have the best funding and often offer the most sophisticated search technology. If you want to buy something a commercial Internet search tool is what you want to use because of what is inside the database. On the other hand, if you are researching a topic for school or for medical advice a commercial Internet search tool may not be a wise choice. And…..its all because of what’s inside! In this exercise you will explore the world of non-commercial Internet search tools. The creators of these search tools care very much about what’s inside their database and therefore claim to only put good informational websites in their databases. You may be pleasantly surprised by what is inside the databases of the Internet search tools you will explore in this Track.
