The Black Plague, Chinese horoscope, dreams, urban legends and scientific testing have all helped to escalate the human fear of rats.  Winston’s fear of rats as presented in George Orwell’s novel is not an arbitrary reference, but rather one that which can be historically and socially interpreted.
