Intended Audience: 10th Grade History Students
Intended Outcome: The intended outcome of this lesson is for students to have a better understanding of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and how this lead to the United States' involvement in World War II.
Objectives: Upon completion the student will have accomplished the following:
- Be able to determine why the United States became involved in World War II.
- Be able to identify the reason why Pearl Harbor was attacked.
- Be able to reconstruct the events of Pearl Harbor.
- Be able to assess the damage by examining photographs.
- Be able to discuss whether or not Japan's attack was successful.
- Be able to understand United States' reaction to the attack.
Materials: paper, pen or pencil, & computer with internet connection
Procedure: Before students begin researching the attack on Pearl Harbor inform the students of what their assignment is upon completion of their research. During this lesson student will use the following websites to research the attack on Pearl Harbor: http://www.history.navy.mil/faq66-1.htm, http://www.eyewitnesshistory.com/pearl.htm, http://www.eyewitnesshistory.com/pearl2.htm, and http://www.navsource.org/Naval/arph.htm. Upon viewing and researching the websites, students will write an essay from the point of view of an eye witness (medical, military, or civilian). In this essay the student should include their reaction to the attack and if they felt Japan was successful at the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Evaluation: The students essays will be evaluated using the criteria below. The essay will be worth a total of 20 points.

- 5 points-students followed the guidelines that were given
- 5 points-students provided factual information
- 5 points-students showed creativity in their essay
