Track Description
This track addresses the Reading standards of the Language Arts Framework. The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation and appreciation of the written text.
"Inferring Character Traits" helps students recognize character traits and relationships among characters as well as changes in traits and relationships as the book progresses.
"Listening and Reading Comprehension" uses the newspaper to improve student listening and reading comprehension skills by playing a game to enhance the student's attention to detail.
"KWL - A Reading Comprehension Strategy" uses a comprehension strategy that addresses the frustration students feel when unable to understand what they are reading. This strategy, KWL, is suitable for all grade levels. K stands for what you know, W stands for what you want to know, and L stands for what you want to learn. Students are guided through a selected book using reading journals and this strategy.
"Word Meanings in Context - Antonyms" uses brief texts to guide the student through choosing which of two antonyms makes sense in the context of the text.
"The Presidential Campaign" uses an essay and a series of statements from which the student surmises what the opinion of the author of the text might be based on the averments in the essay.
"Winter Heat" utilizes a short story and discussion questions to reinforce attention to detail.
"The Idea" encourages the student to choose the correct missing words from selected text based on the context of the story.
