Track Description
In evaluating test scores in the first semester of 1999, I found that 60-70 percent of my students experienced difficulty locating continents and recognizing them by sight. In the Tennessee Curriculum Frameworks one of the standards is: Students will demonstrate a basic geographic knowledge through identifying and locating major physical and political features on globes and maps. Another standard is students will identify and show an understanding of the major physical characteristics of places and regions of the world.
In order for the student to meet theses standards they will first locate continents using memory clues and recall from sight. The students will also demonstrate knowledge from using latitude and longitude in order to locate the continents. Technology will be implemented in the lessons using a tutorial and a simulated test quiz for the student.
The advantages to this unit is that the students become well aware of the continents and their location. I would recommend this unit to any teacher having difficulty with students recognizing their continents.
