The book, THE GIVER by Lois Lowry is a great tool for teaching students about community and about looking beyond the world that they know. It's important that they realize that a utopian society would not be best for everyone because not everyone would agree. By attempting to work together to create a community, they should see that they have difficulties agreeing on how it should be. This Track provides some research for students as they design their own communities.
