 Track Description
In Language Arts class, the students will be reading the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry. At the end of the unit, the students will determine whether the setting of the novel is a utopia or a dystopia. Please answer the following questions: 1. You and your team have been hired as travel agents working in Jonas’s community. You are going to be designing a new travel brochure that will persuade outsiders to visit your community. Your job is to make a list of all the community’s rules. You must come up with a decision as to which rules are the most important. Then you must decide which rules would persuade outsiders to come to the community. 2. Underneath the placid calm of Jonas's society lies a very orderly and inexorable system of euthanasia, practiced on the very young who do not conform, the elderly, and those whose errors threaten the stability of the community. What are the disadvantages and benefits to a community that accepts such a vision of euthanasia? Would you rather be a member of Jonas’s society or your own society? Why?
