Students in the eighth grade do not usually enjoy writing or reading poetry. But if they are introduced to poetry in a fun way, students can began to appreciate different forms of poetry. In testing students on basic poetry, most of them did not correctly answer the questions. A TN Curriculum Framework Standard for Language Arts, Reading, Grades 6-8, states, The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. By teaching the unit Poetry Intro the learning expectations students will use comprehension strategies to enhance understanding, to make predictions, and to respond to literature; select reading materials for a variety of purposes; and use cognitive strategies to evaluate text critically, and identify and interpret literary elements and figurative language are addressed. This unit uses fun activities and music to introduce students to poetry and encourages students to create their own poems. This unit also addresses the Language Arts, Writing Standard, The student will develop the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audiences. The learning expectations for this standard, write frequently for a variety of purposes such as narration; use a variety of appropriate organizational strategies to develop writing on various topics; and demonstrate effective writing style by the use of vivid words, varied sentences, and appropriate transitions are meet. At the conclusion of this unit it is expected that students will see poetry through different eyes.
