 Track Description
Elementary students often demonstrate little knowledge of or respect for different cultures. The Native American culture is an important part of our nation's history. Through the use of literature, a teacher can bring the culture to life in an exciting way. A Tennessee Social Studies History Standard for grades 3-5 states that students will exhibit a knowledge of history identifying and describing major events, people, and trends. A Learning Expectation for this standard states that students will identify people who lived in the United States prior to exploration and colonization. A Language Arts Reading Grades 3-5 Standard states that students will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. One Learning Expectation for this standard states that students will experience and develop interest in literature which includes multicultural, gender, and ethnic diversity. The "Annie and the Old One" unit was chosen because it addresses both standards. The activities are based on the book written by Miska Miles and are designed to supplement a unit focused on Southwest Native American cultural themes. It provides resources for students in the third grade to focus on the traditions of the Navajo Indian tribe and how physical features affect where and how people live. This unit combines the use of Native American literature with the area of Social Studies to present an enjoyable learning experience. The Library/Media Center is the perfect setting for exposing third grade students to multiculture literature.
