 Track Description
Students have demonstrated difficulties in analyzing maps and utilizing the information from the maps. Students usually do not view map making as something that is done by people. This unit acquaints students with some of the problems associated with map making. After the unit, my students will be aware of the placement of continents and oceans by drawing them on a handmade globe. My students will become aware of placement of the equator, the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, and the North and South Poles by drawing them on a handmade globe. According to the Tennessee Social Studies Standards, students will be able to use maps, globes, and other geographic representaions, tools, and techniques to acquire, process, and report information from a spatial perspective. To achieve this standard, the learner will: * Locate places using cardinal and intermediate directions. * Use scale to measure and estimate distances. * Interpret physical features of land from symbols on maps. * Locate and identify the equator, continents, oceans, and large islands on a map and globe.
