In surveying 8th grade students concerning drug usage, I discovered that 67% had tried alcohol, 21% have experimented with marijuana, and 48% have or are currently smoking cigarettes. A TN Curriculum Framework Standard for Comprehensive Health, Grades 6-8, is Substance Use and Abuse: The student will understand appropriate and inappropriate uses of chemical substances. Another states: Students will understand the consequences of chemical use and abuse. Although students go through the D.A.R.E. program in 5th and 7th grades, the message concerning drug usage must be continually reinforced in 8th grade. By teaching this unit students will understand the importance of a positive self-concept, interpersonal relationships and the relationships of sound social, emotional, and mental health practices to wellness (Emotional/Social/Mental Health Framework, Grades 6-8, Standard 6). In order to help students identify consequences of a wrong decision, the book Izzy, Willy-Nilly is used. In this book, a teenager suffers a physical handicap due to drunk driving. Incorporating the book addresses the Language Arts Standard for Reading, Grades 6-8, which states: The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. Students will also use the Internet to research information on drug abuse and statistics concerning their age group, addressing Computer Technology: Literacy and Usage, Grades 6-8, Standard 6 stating: Students will use technology as a tool to conduct and evaluate research and to communicate effectively information and ideas.
