Track Description
In this unit the students will learn what homonyms are by sharing jokes containing homonyms; a book, "Abelia Bedelia"; and by constructing a homonym 'pear' tree on which to display 'pairs' of homonyms. The objective is that the students will demonstrate knowledge and use of homonyms in spoken and written context. It will help to remediate the identified learning gap which is that the students cannot select the correct homonym from a set and use it in context. Also it helps to meet the grade level 3-5 language arts content standard which states that the student will develop the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audiences; and the student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text and that the student will express ideas clearly and effectively in a variety of oral contexts and apply active listening skills in the analysis and evaluation of spoken ideas. By completing this unit, my students will learn to try more than one way to solve a problem and to think about what are their best skills that can be used to complete these tasks, all higher order thinking skills from the survey.
