Track Description
The unit Hatchet addresses the learning gap my students are
experiencing which is recognizing words in context. In the book,
students will be exposed to many new vocabulary words. This is due, in
part, to the fact that the book takes place in the Canadian wilderness.
This environment is different from anything some of these students have
experienced. In addition to words in context and vocabulary the students
will develop necessary reading skills for word recognition,
comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of
the written text. These are standards that will be addressed in the unit.
Students will improve their Internet research skills, by moving
back and forth using links within web sites and keyword searches to
locate information.
Students will also improve their ability to gain information from
and article, summarize, restate in their own words, and evaluate what
they have read.
The finished product of this unit of study will be:
(1) Create an orienteering map of different parts of the school grounds.
(2) Create an expository report on Canadian wildlife.
(3) Produce a survival guide.
