 Track Description
The stated Learning gap is difficulty adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. I used this unit in my Competency Mathematics class with 9th grade students who have not passed the Tennessee Math Competency Test. The 6-9 Competency Mathematics Number Sense and Number Theory learning expectations states students will represent and use numbers in a variety of equivalent forms, including integers, fractions, decimals, percent, and exponential and scientific notation. The unit first assesses students prior learning, then progresses to check whether they can find a common denominator and add and subtract unlike fractions, expressing answers in the lowest terms. In addition, it serves to encourage higher level thinking skills as students use the internet to practice skills on line and as they set goals, compare their work to standards and check their progress against their goals.
