Track Description
Reading is a critical skill throughout all of life, but perhaps no more critical than in middle school and beyond. This age student rarely displays any interest in practicing this vital skill. Without practice, the chance to improve comprehension and other vital skills is lost. Middle school students have difficulty in researching a topic, delineating the relevant details and putting those details into their own words. This internet unit will require students to use reading and research skills. Students will assume the roles of newspaper reporters seeking to report one aspect of the Revolutionary War. After a classroom study of the parts of a newspaper, students will use the internet to conduct research into the Revolutionary War, use the computer to create a newspaper and present that newspaper to the class. This unit of study should give students practice in narrowing a topic, researching that topic, comprehending the main ideas about that area, and then paraphrasing their research into their own words.
