The unit “Harriet Tubman: Guide to Freedom” was selected because it targets the identified learning gap that students are deficient in writing skills. This lesson also addresses the standard in the 8th grade English/Language Arts 6-8 grade cluster that states: The student will develop the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audiences. Students will read “Harriet Tubman” in their literature book. They will then plan and conduct multiple-step information searched using computer networks and modem-delivered services; recite poetry; write narratives; write responses to literature; write research reports; and write persuasively. “Harriet Tubman: Guide to Freedom” encourages students to think of different ways to tell others what they have learned as addressed in the pre-survey. This lesson provides students opportunities to enhance students' academic and communication skills as targeted in our school improvement plan.
