Track Description
This track contains a lesson plan in which the students will locate poetry online, choose and print out poems they enjoy and use them to create an illustrated booklet. Students will also write one poem of their own to be included.
This track addresses the stated learning gaps in the areas of communication by encouraging an appreciation of literature, practicing reading skills, introducing the fundamentals of writing poetry, and encouraging self-expression through art.
The Tennessee Curriculum Framework is addressed through writing, reading, viewing and representing, and speaking and listening. Through the introduction of the fundamentals of poetry, the students will experience a growing awareness and appreciation of poetry and its opportunities for self-expression and enjoyment.
In 1999, fourth grade Writing Assessment scores indicated a difference of -3 in the Outstanding Category and -1 in the Strong category with only 5% of the students scoring in the Outstanding areas. Spring 1999 TerraNova Reading scores showed areas needing Improvement as Basic Understanding and Identifying Reading Strategies. This track addresses the survey item by providing opportunities for students to practice reading skills, synthesize what they have read, and through illustrating, demonstrate that they have an understanding of what they have read.
