A lesson with worksheets is included about why the Founders thought a Republican form of government was best for America. The students will work in groups to prepare charts to compare and contrast Democracy with a Republic. The students will do research reports comparing and contrasting the Roman Republic with the current American system of government. The track addresses the framework standard of helping students to understand and be able to explain the purposes and stucture of governments with an emphasis on consititutional governments. To achieve the standard the students will explore the development of citizenship and government in ancient civilizations. This unit will help students to recognize what is important about a topic and discuss why. It will also help them to use the Internet in the class to research topics. This will help to achieve the school improvement goal of raising test scores to above the state average in Social Studies in the sixth grade.
