Exposure to new words daily is one tool that we use to expand our vocabulary. So many times children come across words that are unfamiliar to them. Unfortunately, most of the time, they choose to ignore the word without really understanding what the word truly means. The unit Destination Dictionary offers an alternative. It introduces the students to new words that have been taken from a teacher chosen story. The students will learn to find the words in a dictionary, the correct pronunciation, meaning and usage of the new words from the story. This unit addresses the Learning Expectation from the TN Curriculum Framework: extend reading vocabulary utilizing sight words, phonetic and structural analysis, and context; improve comprehension by interpreting, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluation written word; use comprehension strategies to enhance understanding, to make predictions, and to respond to literature. The following Language Arts/ 3-5 Reading content standard is being addressed: the student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation and appreciation for the written text. The students will learn to help themselves to understand a topic better.
