This track on "Finding the Main Idea" is for my 4th grade reading class of low academic achievers. Students will be skimming non-fiction articles to find the main idea, listening to selections to determine main ideas, reading paragraphs to find a stated main idea, and distinguishing main idea and supporting details in expository text using novels. As students complete these activities, they will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text as required in the Tennessee State Curriculum framework. Students will be strengthening critical thinking skills, which have been identified as a weakness in our system school improvement plan. While participating in these track activities, my students will be addressing the following profiler skills: asking questions that help them understand a topic better, spotting important facts and concepts when learning something new, choosing which parts of a topic are most important to explain to others, and recognizing what is important about a topic and why.
