Track Description
The learning gap for my fifth grade math students is the need to demonstrate understanding of equivalent fractions according to TCAPS norms referenced scores for fifth grade 1999-2000.The lesson "Equivalent Fractions Munch with Pizza Pie" was selected because it addressed this Math Standard. In order to develop understanding of Equivalent Fractions the mathematics curriclum should include problems which require students to apply appropriate tools and maniputalives to come up with a larger number of fraction, and then the students should be able to judge which are equivalent and which are not. This lesson provides students opportunities to do just that, it encourages the students to try more then one way to solve a problem and to find ways to use what they learned as addressed in the teacher pre-survey. Also, this lesson allows students opportunities to demonstrate proficiency in basic academic skills as targeted in our school improvement plan.
