Third grade students seem to have difficulty understanding the meanings of new vocabulary words and using them in their writing. They also have problems using a dictionary online and in a book to find the meanings of new words. This unit addresses that problem with several activities that use a dictionary and online helps. The students will use several resources to help them not only find the meanings of new words but to use them in their writing with comprehension. My students revealed to me in their surveys that they do not use the internet as much as they would like to. We will be using the computer for several of these activities. The four learning expectations for this unit are: apply a variety of reading strategies; extend reading vocabulary, utilizing sight words, phonetic, and structural analysis, and context; utilize sources of information, including technology tools; and develop study skills to facilitate learning.
