Track Description
Eighth grade English students have demonstrated difficulties in using correct subject-verb agreement. Terra Nova scores from 1999-2000 indicate that only 28% of the students mastered subject-verb agreement. In teacher prepared tests, the students had a 40% accuracy rate. According to the TN Curriculum Framework Content for the 6-8 grade cluster in English/Language Arts, the student will develop the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audiences.
This unit addresses that standard. The unit will provide students with an opportunity to learn the rules of subject-verb agreement. The initial lesson "Subjects and Verbs-Making Them Agree" was chosen because it teaches the rules for subject-verb agreement and also gives the students practice with over 100 different sentences. Using Powerpoint is a powerful tool for the visual learners in the classroom. The second link provides that opportunity. Students will have hands-on experience practicing what they have learned. The quizzes are all done on-line and have immediate feedback.
Learning expectations for this unit are as follows: Recognize and demonstrate knowledge of standard English usage, mechanics, spelling, and sentence structure; continue to identify and use resources to revise and edit writing; and within the context of phrases, sentences, and short paragraphs, identify the correct use of agreement between subject and verb.
