The learning gap is that students have demonstrated difficulties in writing a book review. The unit "Book Review" was chosen because it encourages students to choose words carefully in describing the character, plot, setting, and mood of a novel. The Language Arts 6-8 cluster writing content standard states that the students will develop the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audiences. This unit allows my students to write creatively a description of the book which will be read by various audiences. Question number 7 of the survey states: "My students think of different ways to tell others what they have learned." My students need to be able to do this in my class.
