Track Description
Students will begin this activity working alone to identify and list the "Bill of Rights". After a time of discussion students will be divided into groups of three or four to list ten rights for home, school, and in public. They will match their lists to the "Bill of Rights" and present the lists to the class. Students will then use newspapers to find three articles demonstrating current use of the "Bill of Rights". They will present one article to the class. Discussion will follow. This lesson will take five days to complete. This unit will address the civic and government framework standards:
#1 Students will understand and be able to explain the purposes and structures of governments with an emphasis on constitutional governments.
#2 Students will be able to analyze, interpret, and evaluate the rights, responsibilities, and privileges of citizens living in a democratic society.
#3 Students will analyze the United States Constitution in principles and practice, describing the republican form of government it creates.
#4 Students will be able to explain the extent to which Americans have incorporated the principles of the Constitution into their daily lives.
#5 Students will gain knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become contributing citizens in our participatory democracy.
Students will learn how the "Bill of Rights" and other aspects of government effect our lives today. Hopefully this will bridge the gap students have concerning our government and the "bill of Rights". To improve pre-survey question answers students will use the Internet and newspapers to gather information about our government and apply what they find to their daily lives.
