This unit addresses the learning gap of 50% of third grade students displaying inappropriate social skills. There are a multitude of activities that help children understand how to deal with conflict. The lessons teach the children what feelings are and how to successfully deal with them. This unit allows the students to actively participate in real life scenerios, where they learn to handle feelings and situations of aggression or conflict. The Tennessee School Counseling Program Student Standards for the domain - Social and Personal Development are addressed in this unit.The Student standards are Making Responsible Decisions and Gaining Self Awareness. These standards are met by providing students with the opportunities to see how conflicts can be solved in appropriate ways. Students are exposed to positive and appropriate social skills.The unit also addresses several Pre-Survey questions including: Trying to do your best, Using the Internet to practice skills online and Trying more than one way to solve a problem as well as a few others more indirectly. Students will be involved in role play activities, peer mediation activities and be a part of cooperative groups. This unit will help young students succeed in becoming a positive member of their school and community.
