 Track Description
Students need a basic understanding of and the ability to analyze written text. On the Reading section of the spring 2000 Terra Nova Test, 54% of last year's fourth grade students entering the fifth grade this year attained partial mastery or non-mastery level in basic understanding and 59% attained partial mastery or non-mastery level in analyzing text. A Tennessee Curriculum Framework Content for Language Arts Standards for Grades 3-5 is Reading: The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. Learning expectations for this standard includes requiring the student to: use comprehension strategies to enhance understanding, to make predictions, and to respond to literature; improve comprehension by interpreting, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating written text; read independently for a variety of purposes; and develop skills in making inferences and recognizing unstated assumptions. This unit will present students with a variety of reading opportunities and activities about Native Americans that will actively engage them in interpreting analyzing, and evaluating the written text while focusing on comprehension strategies such as comparison and contrast. The reading selections and activities will further enhance their understanding, their ability to make predictions, and develop a further appreciation for the written text and for Native Americans and their cultures.
