Track Description
Track Description: The stated learning gap is the extreme difficulty my
class has
experienced this school year learning and recalling their
map facts. When we began map skills this
year with the third grade, only eight of my
eighteen students mastered the skills needed for map reading
a teacher made test. The unit "What Do Maps Show:
Introduction to Maps" was
chosen because it emphasizes
several different type of learning styles to help teach the
map skills. Several different mapsand information from them are
easily mastered and the more difficult map skills can be drilled.
Students can practice learning
their
map skills by using the information from their books or the Internet. Several individual facts were taught by catchy phrases and rhymes. The objectives for the unit plan and additional URL's are as follws: 1.The learner will know about different kinds of maps and characteristics of each. 2. The learner will know about different kinds of maps and characteristics of each.
3. The learner will know map features for different kinds of maps. 4.The learner will draw a map to scale using a grid system. 5. The student will find locations on the map using north, south, east and west and map related terminology. Based upon the survey, I want my students to try and learn more than one way to solve a map skill problem. I want them to be successful at all the map skills that seem hard to do. I also want them to learn how to read a map as completely as they can.
