 Track Description
Students read various African Folktales on-line in order to become familiar with the myths of Africa. They looked for the universal themes in myths and compared the African to American and European myths.Then they assembled in groups to write their own folktales, and present them in class. This track addresses the following learning gap: students lack critical reading skills. The curriculum standard is Reading: Content Standard: The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. This track will help students improve critical reading skills such as identifying the main idea, drawing conclusions, summarizing events, sequencing events, making inferences, identifying cause and effect relationships, identifying fact and opinion, and identifying details. The learning expectations for this track are as follows: The student will state the main idea of the text and give supporting ideas. The student will draw conclusions from the text. The student will summarize the main events, concepts and facts in proper sequence. The student will make inferences about important concepts, events and facts to make a final presentation. The student will use the Internet to apply critical reading skills.
