 Track Description
The learning gap is: (My third grade students have difficulty with reading comprehension). This unit, Folktales, was chosen to help overcome this learning gap and to strive to achieve the Reading Curriculum Standard: The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. It also exposes my students to such activities as familiarizing themselves with characteristics of folktales and writing a folktale based on these characteristics, searching folktales on the Web and writing a paragraph about information learned from the sites, reading Native American Lore and choosing five to write creative journal entries telling what they think the folktale means, reading Japanese Folktales to discover new aspects of Japanese culture and having students make sock puppets to act out the folktale, and discussing the questions found in the unit, and reading "Tattercoats" (an English folktale) and then creating an illustration of a scene with a caption. Teacher survey question #1, students find different ways to tell others what they have learned, is incorporated in this unit when they make sock puppets and act out the folktale.
