 Track Description
Track-A-Day
The unit Celebrating Martin Luther King Day addresses the curriculum standard: the learner will examine the roles and contributions made by African Americans and other minority groups in American history. The following learning expectations will be addressed:The student will read a book about a famous African-American and write down important facts about the book; the student will copy down important vocabulary words from the board and look up the meaning in a dictionary; the student will work together and act out how blacks were treated when they rode the bus; the students will work in groups and come up with questions to pretend they are interviewing a famous African-American and record the information on chart paper; the student will write a report on the life of a famous African-American; the student will work in groups and design, draft, and illustrate a booklet about the life of an African American. This unit will help the students understand how people were treated during Dr. King's lifetime and the importance of treating others more fairly, equally and with respect. The activities in this unit addressed my stated learning gap: students lack of knowledge of not knowing the names and contributions made by some African-Americans. The unit also helped the students to spot important facts, concepts, and new words. I chose this unit because it allowed my students to recognize what was important about a topic and discuss why as described in the Profiler Teacher Pre-Survey.
