Track Description
Through observation and evaluation of a student skills checklist I have determined that more than 50% of fourth grade students have difficulty in locating library books by using the Dewey Decimal System. This track relates to the Tennessee Curriculum Framework standard for Reading for Grades 3-5 which states that the student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. Activities that encourage recognizing and comprehending the written word include reading about the beginning of the Dewey Decimal System on the internet, answering questions, and exploring different classifications of books, and playing a game that will combine the skills necessary to locate a book on the shelf. This track addresses a couple of weaknesses shown in the Profiler Survey that students use what they know about this topic in other school subjects and in connecting what they learn in school to what they do outside of school. In addition this track follows the guidelines set forth in our School Improvement Plan of allowing for the development of higher-order thinking skills as related to the use of technology.
