Track Description
The stated learning gap is that 50% of my students are on the 2nd grade level in vocabulary as opposed to the appropriate 3rd grade level. This unit Creating a Book Using Words with High Phonetic Utility was chosen because it applies a variety of reading strategies and extends vocabulary using sight words, phonetic and structural analysis, and context. The Language Arts framework for the 3rd grade states that the students will develop reading skills necessary for word recognition, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. I chose this unit because it uses a variety of techniques to help improve vocabulary. The students write and illustrate a book based upon the works of Eric Carle and Bill Martin. They analyze these books based upon common phoneme structures.
