 Track Description
In evaluating a pretest on map skills, I found that the majority of these 3rd grade social studies students were deficient in map reading skills requiring them to answer questions and report information. The Tennessee Curriculum Frameworks for Social Science, Grades 3-5, Geography Standard 1, states: Students will be able to use maps, globes, and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies to acquire, process, and report information from a spatial perspective. Specific Learning Objectives for this unit are: 1) Locate places using cardinal and intermediate directions and latitude and longitude; 2) Use map scale to measure and estimate distances; and 3) Interpret physical features of land from symbols on maps. Standard 2 states: Students will demonstrate a basic geographic knowledge through identifying and locating major physical and political features on globes and maps. The Specific Learning Objective used: Locate and identify the equator, continents, oceans, and large islands on a map and globe.
