I designed this unit to help your forth grade students learn about estimation in a fun and exciting way. This unit will provide activities in which children deal informally with estimation and numbers in ways that may be new to them. In addition to constructing the concepts of estimation or \"educated guesses,\" students develop a repertoire of counting methods as they interact with their peers and the instructor. My stated curriculum standard is ESTIMATION, MEASUREMENT, AND COMPUTATION: In order to develop understanding of Estimation, Measurement, and Computation, the mathematics curriculum should include problems which require students to apply appropriate tools and units of measurement, to develop effective estimation and computation strategies for producing reasonable results, and to calculate using appropriate tools such as mental mathematics, technology, manipulatives, and pencil-and-paper. The Tennessee Department of Education also states that through the investigation of meaningful problems, individually or in cooperative groups while using appropriate technology, all students in grades 3-5, building upon the K-2 expectations, will be able to apply estimation strategies; and estimate, calculate, and evaluate solutions and communicate a supporting statement. This unit will help my students develop better estimation skills.
